“Inception” is Possible

July 21st, 2010 | Posted in Entertainment

(Warning: semi-spoilers ahead!)

So I saw Inception two nights ago, and just like the rest of Leonardo diCaprio’s movies, this too blew my mind away. I read an interview article wherein Leo mentioned that he was fortunate to have the opportunity to choose the movies he does. And judging by the movies he has made in the last few years, we can definitely say that he’s got taste. The Departed, Blood Diamond, Shutter Island are among the best I’ve seen recently. And his latest movie, Inception, is just as mind-boggling and exciting.

I found the movie intriguing because I, myself, am a big dreamer – literally. I dream almost every night. Most times they’re vivid enough that I can tell people the details of what I dreamed about; and sometimes they’re not that it causes me to spend a few moments each morning “digging deep into the recesses of my mind” to remember what my dream was about (srsly! it stresses me out, lol.). And as for “Inception”, I think I’ve done it to myself once.

Believe it or not, I mastered driving in my dreams before I did in my conscious state. When I was maybe 14 or 15 years old, I got obsessed with driving. For a time, it’s all I could think about — that I must learn how to drive. My dad and my brothers taught me the basics, and they did make me practice from time to time, but I get too scared when I’m on the road, especially a busy one. Once while practicing, I halted and froze in an intersection! The cars behind me were honking loudly while there I was, panicking behind the wheel, not knowing what to do next. Good thing someone was there to remind me to calm down. I got out of there alive, but barely. Lol.

Even though fear took over me, my desire to learn was more intense that I had to do some improvisation. So I learned how to drive in my thoughts. And because I’ve been thinking about it too much, my subconscious of course joined in the fun. And so, for weeks, I practiced driving in my dreams. Yes, while I was asleep! In my dreams, I usually wasn’t driving an ordinary car, but a monster truck complete with those huge wheels! (Go figure.) I would take out the truck from the garage, drive around the city, and when I was done cruising in it, I would drive it back home. The details of my dreams felt real — from turning the keys in the ignition, to shifting gears, balancing the pedals, turning corners, driving in reverse, and parking! My mind was responding accurately to what I was seeing in my dream: the other cars and jeepneys on the road, the pedestrians crossing the street, the sidewalk, and other obstacles.

After some serious practicing (in my thoughts and in my dreams), the fear I had when I’m driving went away. It’s like I suddenly got used to the chaos in the streets that it didn’t bother anymore. I was able to remain calm and do my thing to get from Point A to Point B. Then one day, I was able to drive on my own, for real this time, without supervision. And it was the greatest feeling in the world! At that age, at least. :D

Cobb: “The seed that we planted in this man’s mind, may change everything.”

How silly of me trying to relate my story to the movie Inception, HAHA!! The way I learned how to drive is of course not like what happened in the movie, but I just found a slight connection in there somewhere and used it as an excuse to tell this story. LOLLL.

Obviously, the movie is just fiction, but it does prove something that is real and true: that the mind is so powerful that it can enslave us in so many ways.

I’m mentally tagging Inception as one of my favorite movies. It’s a visionary masterpiece! Looking forward to Leonardo diCaprio’s upcoming films. And Ellen Page’s, too. Good job, June-bug! :)

waah joni, i don’t like inception. siguro because the critics hyped it too much as BRILLIANT and INTELLECTUAL, MIND BOGGLING. basta…didn’t like it. at the end of the movie, i just don’t care and i was just glad the movie’s ended. hahahha. damo bala daw sala na scenes. sige b try mo answer haha

    1) why do they need to go to a 4th dream? sang ara na sila sa snow-mountain area, and Mal shot Fischer, nga-a nagkadto pa si Leo and Ellen sa isa ka dream to KILL Mal and get Fischer???

    2) why do they need a kick IN and OUTSIDE the dream? like sa 4th dream, why did Ellen and Fischer have to jump (for their kick) to get out of the dream, when the other guy already bombed the bldg (snow-mountain scene) so that they will drop (kick) and wake up??? geeez.

daw trying hard na movie. lol

Hahaha! ikaw lang guro ang nakahambal nga wala ka nanamian sa Inception. :)) I like movies that make me *think* that’s why I enjoyed this one. I’ll try to answer your questions according sa pagka-inchindi ko ha, hehehe.

    1) The way I understand it, if they got “killed” in a dream level, they go down another level and get stuck there in “limbo”. They need to remember that they’re just in a dream, so when they finally wake up (4 levels up) they would remember everything. Mal (Cobb’s projection) took Fischer because in Cobb’s subconscious his wife is always trying to get him to stay with her in his dream. He can’t control his subconscious, so he can’t control his projection. Mal wanted to take away Cobb’s attention from Fischer (so Cobb could stay with her) which is why she “took” him?? Killing Mal, Cobb’s projection, is probably a symbolic thing so she’d finally disappear from Cobb’s subconscious, so he can finally move on and decide to be with his kids up above. They needed to “kick” Fischer in the 4th dream, so he can get a jolt and wake up in the 3rd dream. (He didn’t die when Mal shot him in the 3rd dream, na-unconscious lang. )

Wait, I found this explanation somewhere:

Fischer was not killed in the third stage when Mal shot him. He was wounded badly and unconscious, and dying, but not quite dead, not yet. A similar thing happened with Saito in the first stage, and they were able to keep him alive longer by putting him into a deeper sleep state.

After Fischer was shot, they initiated another dream stage, created by Cobb. They use this stage to help Fischer stay alive longer while they get the defibrillator to revive him. Cobb, Ariadne, and Fischer are hooked into the machine for this stage. This stage resembled the limbo Cobb and Mal once lived in for 50 years. This was not actually limbo, but a dream state generated by Cobb to resemble his limbo. This way, he would know exactly where Mal was, and by proximity, where Fischer was, to make sure he is safe. Fischer gets kicked back to the third stage due to being shocked by the defibrillator, allowing time for him to open the safe and read the will before being kicked back to the first stage. Cobb also uses the fourth stage to get closure with Mal by explaining how he used inception on her, and she stabs him.”

    Hmm, “probably”. haha.

    2) To wake up from dreaming in one level, they need to get “kicked” from one level down. So when Fischer and Ariadne jumped from the building in the 4th dream, they woke up in the 3rd dream just in time for them to get “kicked” in the 3rd dream to wake up in the 2nd dream, and so on. Super timing lang siguro.. maybe just a split second? Cos diba 1 hour in the conscious state, means 1 year in the first dream level. So for four dream levels down, the time is actually longer compared to the previous dream level.

LOL okay, you got me thinking there. :))

Was reading this article for explanations, maybe it can help hehehe

<—– heey i like movies that make me think too (American beauty, matrix :P) just not this one. basta. OA lang masyado. hahah

ok…still don't get it. assuming it's a 1 level dream (let's forget the fact that in a 1 level dream, you die = you wake up).. in order to wake up, you just kick the person while dreaming and he will wake up. no need for that person to jump(or get a kick) IN THE DREAM in order to wake up.

This is what I don't get. on 4th dream, they don't really need to jump because the kick on the 3rd dream will wake them up, and thus pull them from the 4th dream.

am i making sense? because these 2 parts so movie sa tuod2x lang doesn't make sense! =))
